Doing Things for Yourself
I don’t know many things. I don’t even know what I don’t know, and sometimes, that’s scary. But it’s also exciting, because getting up and doing the work helps you uncover more truths about yourself. One truth we often forget is that it’s important to do things just for you—things that inspire, relax, or truly engage you.
I used to compare myself to others, which led me into the trap of doing things I wasn’t even sure I wanted to do, simply because I thought I should. You know what I mean? I kept going to university because it seemed like the only path. My parents and the environment I grew up in made it feel like everyone was going, so I followed. But I was miserable. Deep down, I wanted to do something else.
Eventually, I found a job in IT, and I realized that this was the path I wanted. It wasn’t necessarily about the job itself (I started as a QA Tester for mobile apps), but I knew I was heading in the right direction.
Many turning points in my life have happened because I allowed myself to do things for myself. I got deeply interested in Bitcoin and blockchain technology. People around me kept telling me to stop caring about this tech because they thought it would become obsolete. I didn’t listen. I wanted to learn about it simply because I found it fascinating. I was doing it for myself, not for anyone else. The same happened when I dove into Solidity, DeFi, and Security.
“Very little is needed to make a happy life; it is all within yourself, in your way of thinking.” —Marcus Aurelius
I started this blog in 2022 to do something for myself, to rediscover who I am. As I’m writing this, I’m not entirely sure why I’m sharing these thoughts publicly, but I want to write. I want to share the process—all the good and the ugly. Maybe this is just an unfiltered stream of thoughts, and perhaps I don’t know exactly where I’m heading with this article, but I know I’m doing this for myself. I’m having a blast seeing words appear on the screen as I type.
So what’s the lesson from all my rambling? Do things for yourself because you love them. Do things for yourself because they excite you. Do things for yourself when you discover a new passion and want to see where it leads. We only have one life. Spend your days doing what you enjoy, bringing value to others, and maybe—just maybe—you’ll change someone’s life for the better. That’s my goal, at least.
“How we spend our days is how we spend our lives.”
That quote motivates me to work out, do meaningful things (meaningful for me), write, journal, read, and dive into random hobbies like watches, watchmaking, film photography, and countless other passions.
I know the steps toward my “one thing” involve writing often, maybe even daily. I’m not sure if I’ll do it every day, but I know I want writing in my life. It feels like an extension of my journaling—a way to share my thoughts.
So, do your own thing. Discover who you are. Only then can you truly start living and enjoying things for yourself, not just for others.
See You Soon!
